Step-by-Step: Getting a Work Visa in Slovakia

Jan magyer / 8 Mins

Slovakia might not be the first country people name when they think of working in Europe, but in 2025, it’s one of the smartest entry points. It offers legal residence, a job, and access to Schengen without the long delays or impossible requirements you’ll find in bigger countries.
For non-EU nationals, Slovakia workvisa offers a structured, realistic path. But only if you follow the rules clearly, from start to finish. This guide breaks it down.

Step 1 – Find a Real Job Offer

You need a job contract from a company legally registered in Slovakia. It should be full-time, and preferably in one of the shortage sectors like manufacturing, logistics, or welding.

The employer must be able to prove that no Slovak or EU citizen is available for the role. This is called the labour market test, and it’s the government’s way of protecting local workers before hiring from abroad.

Step 2 –Labour Market Test (2–4 Weeks)

This is non-negotiable. If the employer skips it, your application will be refused.

Step 3 – Apply for Temporary Residence

Once the labour market test clears, you can apply for Temporary Residence for the Purpose of Employment. This is Slovakia’s work permit. You’ll need to submit:

  • Valid passport
  • Work contract
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Criminal record certificate
  • Medical report
  • Proof of financial means/li>
You can apply at the Slovak embassy in your home country or inside Slovakia if you enter legally (visa-free or with a valid visa).

Step 4 – Wait for Approval (90 Days Max)

Once submitted, your application goes to the Foreign Police. Standard processing time is up to 90 days, though some approvals are issued faster if all documents are in order. Delays are usually caused by missing signatures, incorrect documents, fake job offers or unregistered companies.

Authorities check everything, and if something feels off, they’ll stop your case.

  • Register your address with the Foreign Police within 3 working days
  • Start work immediately
  • Keep your job or notify authorities if it changes
  • Your permit is tied to the employer. Changing jobs without reporting can cancel your residency
